If ‘Necessity is the mother of all invention’ then the trench coat is the sartorial poster gal!

Beginning life in the WW1 trenches, this classic piece was originally an item of clothing for army officers. Large pockets kept items like maps and compasses safe, oversized flaps and lapels allowed ventilation. A range of waterproof garments were designed during wartime that combined battle requirements with traditional leisure wear aspects. What became known as the ‘Trench Coat’ married the waterproof prowess of a military cape and the regulation great coat crafted for British rank.

Burberry and Aquascutum are both cited for crafting the trench coat, with Thomas Burberry pitching a design to the war office in 1901. The trench coat remained a style soldier through WW11 and it seems the time spent in the trenches earned her a business like savvy, strength and respectability. She’s a fighter alright!

Today, there remains no doubt of its place in the fashion cult classics.

I am so in love with my trench found at The Salvos…I really do feel I walk a little taller, with a battle ready strut, especially when teamed with faux fur and a glamor shade. True to trench coat form I can fit all kinds of things in her pockets – it’s like having a second bag really. Now that’s worth saluting wouldn’t you say!?

My outfit sourced from MySalvosStores.

Great quality trenches can always be found at thrift stores, mine cost $30
